Vacant Home Insurance

What is

Vacant Home Insurance or Vacant Dwelling Insurance?

Vacant Home Insurance (or Vacant Dwelling Insurance) is a specialized property policy designed to protect homes that are completely empty of residents and, usually, personal belongings for an extended period, typically 30 to 60 days or more. Standard homeowners insurance policies reduce or exclude coverage—especially for theft and vandalism—on vacant properties due to the dramatically higher risk of damage going unnoticed. These specialized policies protect the dwelling's structure against specific risks, such as fire, lightning, weather damage, and often offer optional liability coverage. The most common types are Named Peril policies (like DP-1), which only cover the few risks specifically listed, making them less comprehensive but essential for avoiding massive financial losses.
